A Secret Way of Getting Traffic: Submitting to Online Directories

If you are reading this article, more likely than not you own a website that you would like to see be a success. To achieve that level, you need traffic to your site. But where does traffic come from?

One of the better ways to get traffic for your site is to submit your site to the many directories that exist online. Online directories are similar to your phone book yellow pages: These directories are categorized (education, entertainment, health, etc.), and when you submit your website, you suggest a category for your website. Often, you will even be able to submit to a sub-category within a major category. For example, suppose your website is about aromatherapy.
In your submission request, you would suggest “Health” as your main category, “Alternative Medicine” as your sub-category, and “Aromatherapy” as a further sub-category.

Some of the leading online directories are Yahoo!, MSN Small Business, and the DMOZ directory. Unlike search engines, however, listings in online directories are usually not free. As of this writing, you can submit for free to the Yahoo! Directory (http://dir.yahoo.com), but there is not guarantee on how quickly your website will be reviewed for listing. If you need your site reviewed faster, you can pay Yahoo! $299 US for “expedited” service and they will review your site within seven days. However, this fee is a yearly recurring fee. Your website is subject to a yearly review, and is guaranteed neither initial inclusion or to remain listed year after year.

The MSN service is $49 US, and it functions more like a search engine submit service. Their submission service includes inclusion in their own small business directory. DMOZ, on the other hand, is free, but because it is operated by volunteers, it could be awhile before your site is included. Your best options are to submit to DMOZ and pay for the MSN and Yahoo! services.

But why should you spend money? Can’t you just optimize your site for the search engines? You can, but not everyone goes to a search engine for what they are looking for. For example, if someone is searching for gourmet dog treats, they may not use a search engine. Instead, they might go to one of the online directories and look at the listings, much like someone would use the yellow pages in their phone book. Your investment in gaining inclusion in the online directories will pay off for you in a multitude of ways.

You will increase traffic to your site. Your site will be included in the online directories, as well as the search engines, and this will help you gain traffic as people search directory listings and find your website.

You will increase the number of backlinks to your site. If the directory pages are listed in search engines, the link they provide for your site will be listed in the search engines. This benefits you by creating more ways for people to find your site. Ultimately, this will provide more traffic for you.

Submitting to directories is a quick way to gain links. Optimizing your site for the search engines is very difficult and time-consuming.
It can take a lot of time to learn how to write for the search engines. In the meantime, any links you can get will help you with the search engines, and submitting to directories will get you links.

Submitting to directories is relatively inexpensive, and a good investment. As stated earlier, you can submit to Yahoo! and MSN for less than $350. DMOZ is free. If you run a search for online directories, you will find many more where you could submit inexpensively, or even for free.

In short, submitting to online directories is one of the best ways for you to build traffic to your website. In the end, you need traffic to survive online. So get started!

Submitting your Web Site to Free Directories

Submitting your website to the various online directories is an important part of any Link Popularity campaign. Whilst your traffic from many directories may be minor or irrelevant, relevant incoming links to your website will help in your overall search engine link popularity.

Other than Yahoo!, which is quite frankly beyond the reach of many smaller websites, paying for your directory submission can be a waste of money. You can get just as good a resultfrom submitting to free directories, or those that are free with a reciprocal link. If the directory is exceptionally good, the cost is low, and your directory ranking will be improved by paying a fee, do so if you wish. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend you pay for what you can get free elsewhere.

To start with on your submission campaign, in my opinion it is better to submit to those directories that will allow you to easily modify your listing. That way, you can correct mistakes and get your campaign down pat before submitting to directories that don’t allow you to logon and modify your submission, thus saving yourself from wasting or reducing in value your efforts in those directories.

What Directories to Submit To

The best are Search Engine Friendly directories (those that actually have your site URL listed at some point, rather than outlinks that are simply code). Some will ask for a reciprocal link, some will not. One list of non-reciprocal directories is at http://info.vilesilencer.com/. Opinion at the moment is suggesting that non-reciprocal or one-way links are better, although any relevant link is useful. Directories that encode their links are mostly useful for traffic if their Alexa Ranking is high enough. Directories that do not encode outgoing links will help your website’s Search Engine Ranking.

Choose the Relevant Directory Category

Most directories will have many categories you can submit your site to. Decide on the one that is most relevant, preferably a keyword that you are aiming for high search engine ranking in, and try to submit to the same or similar category in every directory, at least for your main page (also see Deep Linking below). This will increase the ranking of your site relating to the keyword chosen.

Deep Linking

It can be worth linking to other pages on your site other than your main page. Before doing this, make sure that the directory you are submitting to permits you to both submit URLs other than your home page (some only allow top level submission), and for the same site to be submitted to different categories (not all directories permit what are essentially multiple submissions of the same website). This will work especially if you have online tools or directories (such as your links page) on your site that are useful and relevant to add to other directory categories.

Submit to Different Categories

If the directory allows multiple submissions, and your website is relevant in several categories, submit to all the relevant categories you can. This will increase the number of incoming links to your website. Again, carefully check the terms of any directory before trying this to make sure it is permitted.

Write Title

Write the title for your website. Try to include a keyword you are aiming for ranking in in the title, but make the use of it appropriate, don’t just bang a keyword in for the sake of it; you could get your site submission rejected.

Write Description

Describe your website in a way that will attract visitors. The length of your description will vary from directory to directory, but most will be under 250 characters. Some will allow up to 1,000 characters, and in those cases write the most comprehensive description of your site and its features that you can.

It is a good idea to write several descriptions of different lengths, say from under 50 characters for a brief overview, to around 150 characters for a fuller description, up to 250 characters for a yet more comprehensive listing, and finally a full description as previously mentioned for over 250 characters. Keep your listing pertinent to your website, insert keywords where relevant and appropriate, but do not just submit a keyword listing, as most directories will reject your submission.

Save all your descriptions in a text file, and just copy & paste into the descriptions boxes when needed rather than typing the same descriptions out again and again.

Choose Keywords

Again, as with the description mentioned above, the amount of keywords you can use will vary from directory to directory. Some will not give the option, some will allow you numbers of keywords, whilst others go by numbers of characters. Make a list of all relevant keywords for your site, from most important to least, and basically keep adding keywords until either you get to the bottom of your list (unlikely unless your list is really short) or you run out allowed characters/keywords. Check what keywords your competitors are going for if you need inspiration. This can often be done by viewing the source of a web page and checking the META tags. Again, save your keywords to a text file.

Keep Track of Your Progress

Keep a careful record of what directories you have submitted to, and your progress. It is far too easy to totally lose track of what you are doing, which does not help your linking campaign at all. The best way is by using a spreadsheet, such as Excel, to keep track of your campaign.

At a minimum, you need to keep track of the following: Directory URL, Directory Name, Date Submitted, User Login & Password for those directories that allow you to alter your details and Response (accepted/declined). Other categories can include: Directory Alexa Ranking, Directory Page Rank (this will be for the home page only), Referral URL (if the directory will improve your ranking for referring visitors) and any Notes.

If you are using the deep linking and multiple submissions strategies above, also keep track of what other pages you have submitted to each directory. Make a seperate entry for each URL submitted. For example, your spreadsheet columns could go as follows: Directory Name, Directory URL, URL Submitted, Referral URL, Login, Password, Alexa Ranking, Page Rank, Date Submitted, Response. I would advise keeping the list in alphabetical order, rather than order submitted, as that way you can check more easily whether or not you have submitted to a particular directory.

Submit to Web Directories to Increase Search Engine Rankings

Submission to web directories has been one of the oldest methods to increase search engine rankings of a site, which is still working. This is an SEO strategy that many websites consider to get targeted traffic to their websites. Such submission could be quite useful if they’re done at the right web directories. One good reason for such benefits will be revealed to us when we check out the backlinks of some websites with high Alexa ranking at this search engine.

Usually when you use such services, you can submit one page to several directories. Therefore, this will be a good opportunity to enhance the search engine ranking of that particular page for the keywords in your mind. But there are certain steps that you should take before you submit to web directories. I explain them here at this article for you.

Keyword Research Before Submission to Web Directories

You should conduct a keyword research to for the page you’d like to submit. Then, when you finalize a decision on which phrases to target for that particular page, you can start optimizing that page for it. Here the question will be how to optimize such a page.

Keywords are the road map to the search engine rankings. So, you should use them at your title and close to the beginning of the title tags. Then, you use them at least at headings 1 to 3 of the page. Again, the best practice will be to use it close to the beginning of the headings. After that, an optimized copywriting skill is required to write a webpage content with those keyphrases in it.

Keep in mind that there are some other measures that you can take to enhance that particular page from inside your site like strengthening the linking structure of your site. You can link to this certain webpage from inside your site. When you are explaining some topic, make a link to this page using the key phrase as links. This has a great impact on the importance of that certain keyphrase at your site.

Often the SEO service providers, who are in directory submission, don’t write such pages for you and only perform the submission job. It’s your duty to do this before you hire such submission service providers. Do not skip this step as it’s the prerequisite step to the submission work.

Which Web Directories to Submit to?

1) Yahoo Directory

Yahoo is the web directory the link of which can boost your search engine rankings in Google. When you get a link from Yahoo directory, many other web directories add a link to your page too. The sites indexed at this directory are well categorized by its powerful team of human editors. Of course, the submission doesn’t mean you’re listed.

An amount of US$299 (nonrefundable) is paid for evaluation. If you’re approved, your link will be uploaded. If not, your money will not be refunded. So, take a lot of care before you submit to them to make sure you comply with their rules.

2) Open Directory Project (ODP)

DMOZ, ODP or Open Directory is another web directory that is free, but you cannot accelerate their inclusion process. On the other hand, as human editors work in that directory to index your site, they will include any description that they deem fit for your site. Of course, you can write to them if you disagree with it, but it takes a lot of time to get answer form them. Yet, Google gives a lot of credit to your site if you get a link from them.

You have to wait for a long time till you receive an approval from them. It’s worth submitting to them, because Google and Yahoo Search will use their listings. Also other web directories use DMOZ listings.

Submitting a site’s URL id a lot of work. In fact, there are thousands of directories of any kind. This can be tired and boring – but necessary.

Submitting your site automatically, may cause a duplicated advertisement to appear in many directories – thing that search engines does not like. It is most important that every directory will have a differ text or description of your site, so you will get the most out of this advertising work. although every directory has a infinite list of category, hard to choose from, it is highly recommended that you will take a few moments to decide which category is the best for your site. If you will compromise, you might get the opposite target. If there is no category fitted to your site, you can give it up and go to another directory.

Web Directories and Reasons to Submit

Few webmasters realize the real potential of the web directories. However, the ones who do always manage to reap the rewards of a good web directory submission campaign. This is, on many occasions, what makes the difference between existing on the World Wide Web and not being visible at all.

So what exactly are web directories? Well, it is what the name states. It is a directory which contains links to other websites on the Internet. It manages and categorizes the site submissions it receives based on each site’s theme.

Many people confuse the link directory with the search engine. While the former simply manages categories and places the web sites in the category that they belong to, the latter displays the sites based on the keywords that represent them.

There are various types of web directories. Depending on the subjects they cover, they can be either general directories or specialized directories. The general directories cover any theme, and they have broad thematic coverage. In other words, any site can make a submission to these directories, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the policies (for instance, there are directories which don’t accept adult or gambling sites, but there are some which accept them).

Then, there are specialized directories, and these cover a specific niche, which can be anything from a regional approach to a specific subject like Medicine, Marketing, etc. The best thing to do if you own a site and want to promote it is to submit to the general directories and then find out if there are any niche directories that you could submit to.

Another classification is by the fees they charge. There are free directories and paid directories, and they are self-explanatory regarding what they mean. Also, another category which is between these two is reciprocal link directories, which means that you will have to link back to them from your own site. This seems like free submission but it isn’t quite like that.

The main two advantages of web directory submissions are the extra traffic you get and the backlinks to your own site (which is good for your search engine rankings and which ultimately also turns into traffic). However, if you do it strictly for the backlinks, make sure that the directories you submit to don’t associate the “nofollow” attribute with the link (which basically means that the search engine will not follow the respective link).

The most notorious web directories are the Yahoo Directory and DMOZ (the Open Directory Project). The Yahoo Directory has two options, a free one and a paid one, and DMOZ is free (however, you will probably have to wait a few months until you get included, because the links are manually reviewed and included in the directory by a group of volunteers). But in the end, it’s well worth it because if you make a consistent web directory submission campaign, you will certainly see great results.

Get Listed on Page One Using the Best Article Submission Sites

Article directories have recently become very popular. There are over 600 directories on the Internet and more are appearing every day. Unfortunately, the average life of a new directory site is about three months. Within six months, over 80% of them will close their doors. I suppose it is because they were not making as much money as they hoped. Or perhaps it is because these sites are fairly time intensive, requiring an editor to review each article before it is published. It is probably a combination of these two factors.

For that reason, it is important to submit your articles to the best article submission sites. These are the biggest directories that have been around the longest and have the highest Page Ranks. I have submitted a number of articles on this subject in the past. In this article, I want to talk about backlinks and getting your website listed on page one of the search engines.

Backlinks are very important if you want to improve your website’s Page Rank. The Page Rank of your website is one factor that determines popularity of your site. The more popular your site, the higher it appears in search results. The most popular site will appear as the first listing on page one of a search. The second most popular site will get the second listing, and so on. Ideally, you want your website to appear on the first page of search results. This can bring you tons more traffic than if your site shows up on page 150 of search results. If your site appears on page 150, you will see little if any traffic from the search engines.

One way to improve your Page Rank is by getting links from larger Page Ranked sites that point back to your website. An easy way to accomplish this is by submitting articles. Each time you submit an article, the article directory will post your links on their site.

But, it does you little or no good to list your articles with directories that have low Page Rank numbers. That is why it is important to submit to only the best article submission sites. I classify the best submission sites as directories with a Page Rank of 4 or higher. (The Page Rank of the article directory must be higher than the Page Rank of your own site.)

By consistently submitting articles to The Best Article Submission Sites, you will see the Page Rank numbers of your site slowly improve. And, as your Page Rank improves, your site will creep up in search results and you will develop more search engine traffic.

Do you want to know how I do it? I have just completed my brand new guide on submitting articles to promote your site and make money.

Submit your Articles to the Best Article Submission Sites

Article marketing can reward you with a number of significant benefits. If done properly, it can generate monthly income for your online business. It can bring in loads of traffic. And it can improve the Page Rank of your site. But, if you just write one or two articles a week, you will not accomplish any of these goals. You have to write at least four to five articles a week (one a day would be better and three a day would be best) and you have to submit your articles to the best article submission sites.

What do I mean by the best articles submission sites? For the most part, these are the largest article directories, and usually include sites with a Page Rank of four and above. It does you little good to submit your articles to a site that gets little traffic.

That is why it is important to track your articles and check on the number of page views that your articles are getting once a month. If the article directory allows you to check your article stats, do so. Using that feature, you can determine the number of page views your articles are getting. If your articles are receiving few, if any, page views, stop submitting to them and submit to another.

If the article directory does not have an option to check your stats, a good stat counter can supply you with that information if you are linking your articles to your website (and you should be).

In addition to submitting your articles to the best article submission sites, you should also submit them to a number of directories that are related to your niche. Normally, these sites will attract people that are actively looking for information on a particular subject. If you are promoting a product or your website, this is a very good place to submit articles to generate interested prospects.

So, in closing, do not submit articles to the very small or new directories. Submit them where it will benefit you most. Send them to the best article submission sites. That way, if the articles are well written. You know that you will get your fair share of page views.
